Clearing, Limestone County style

This county is building — anyone who's driven the corridor east of Athens or watched the rooftops march across old cotton ground near Greenbrier knows it. Some of that work starts with clearing: a homesite pad and drive out of a wooded parcel, a perc-and-septic corridor opened up, a view cut toward the creek bottom. The other half of clearing here is reclamation — fence lines swallowed by cedar and hackberry, privet and honeysuckle turning a back five into a wall, sweetgum thickets taking a pasture one season at a time. Cedar in particular treats every unmowed limestone ridge in the county as an invitation.

The right method depends on the ground and the goal. Selective clearing keeps the white oaks and takes everything under them; forestry mulching grinds brush and small stems in place into a mat that holds the soil; full grub-and-haul strips a build pad to dirt. Each leaves a different site and a different bill, so say what the land is for — house, pasture, hunting ground, or just mowable again — and the plan gets built around that.

Worth knowing before you clear

Property lines matter more in clearing than any other tree work — a surveyed line beats everybody's best recollection of where the old fence ran. If the parcel drains toward a creek or sits near the Wheeler refuge boundary at the county's south end, mention it; good operators plan around wet ground and buffers rather than discovering them. And clearing season is real: dormant-season work on soft bottomland ground tears up less than the same job in a wet spring.
